overview

Patch-A-Play is an interactive play mat designed for children, with the goal of building connections and vocabulary. By utilising RFID technology, kids can interact with different detachable elements and trigger audio responses. The primary goal of the concept is to encourage children to engage in role play and storytelling, which ultimately leads to connection building ⟡

The Problem

Why?

Open-ended play and storytelling are the main aspects in building creative thinking and social connection in children, but there is a lack in toys and tools that push children to imagine their own worlds. With the rise of discussions on immigration and the decrease of empathy towards immigrant, I explored how design can fit into this subject through research and identifying gaps. This led me to identify a lack of study in how internationally-displaced children are supported in their adjustment to new environments.
The Solution

How?

Patch-A-Play is a play mat designed to be an open-ended mat that encourages children to build their own stories and worlds. which is done in three ways:

୨ৎ The musical patches on the mat trigger fantastical music that builds the atmosphere for role play.
୨ৎ The word patches on the mat have words embroidered, which varies between simple, day-to-day words and fun, engaging words.
୨ৎ Toys and other supportive elements are placed around the mat to inspire new ideas and plot points.
