Interaction - Bachelor

Oasis

Oasis is an interactive tangible installation that encourages users to slow down, be present and to appreciate the quiet moments we often overlook in our busy lives.

The problem

There has been a significant rise in occupational stress as technology has made work constantly accessible. The line between work and rest has become increasingly blurred, making it difficult for people to disconnect. This highlights the importance of designing experiences that promote genuine rest not as a luxury, but as an essential part of a balanced, sustainable work life.

Design concept

Oasis responds to this problem by creating a calm, interactive space that invites users to pause and reconnect with stillness. Through simple, mindful gestures the installation encourages people to step away from constant stimulation. It transforms the act of taking a break into an intentional, restorative experience, supporting wellbeing in an increasingly fast-paced, digital world.

Design process

interaction

As users gently place stones on the acrylic surface, a concealed webcam beneath captures their position in real time and feeds the data into TouchDesigner. The silhouettes of the stones are translated into digital form and displayed on the tablet, seamlessly merging with the generative visuals. Each placement subtly influences the rhythm and flow of the visuals, slowing their movement and creating a moment of calm reflection. The interaction is intentionally meditative, encouraging users to pause, observe, and become aware of how their simple actions shape the surrounding environment.

Stones

Just as stones in a Zen garden symbolise stability amid the shifting patterns of raked sand, the stones in Oasis serve as anchors of calm within the flowing visuals, grounding the experience in stillness and intention.

Generative visuals

Inspired by the raked sand of Zen gardens, where each line and ripple symbolises the gentle flow of water, the visuals in Oasis are reimagined through TouchDesigner as fluid, ever-evolving digital patterns. These flowing forms respond subtly to the placement of stones, evoking the meditative process of raking sand.
